A tarp is a big piece of tissue used to cover unused items or to protect them from dust.
History
"Children of the Gods" (1997)
In the Stargate Command embarkation room, the Stargate is covered by a tarp. Unaware of the device, a bunch of US Air Force guards play poker in the room. One of them, Senior Airman Weterings notices that the tarp has moved, yet the other don't care and continue to play. Weterings stands up and comes on the ramp to the covered device. Suddenly the ramp rumbles and the tarp flies off, revealing a spinning Stargate.
Soon after the Stargate Program is back on line, all the tarps are removed.
