Apophis was a powerful Goa'uld System Lord. After Ra's death, his power increased and he became the main enemy of the Tau'ri in general, and more particularly SG-1. In 2001, after have been in war for many years, his fleet was destroyed in the Vorash system and Apophis was finaly killed by the Replicators, trapped in a mothership.

Biography

According to The Book of the Dead, Apophis was the Serpent guard, Ra's rival, ruling the night as Ra was the sun god, ruling the day (SG1: "Children of the Gods"). He harvested many worlds to pick humans to establish them as Jaffa, hosts or slaves (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "The Enemy Within", "Cor-ai").

Character's evolution

"Children of the Gods" (1997)

Some day in the beginning of 1997, Apophis, his Serpent guards and Teal'c, his First Prime, come through the Stargate on Earth. They find five US Air Force guards in the Stargate Command sub-level 28. He subdues and kidnaps a female Airman, and orders to kill the rest. After the fight, General Hammond has just enough time to see his glowing eyes before Apophis leaves the place through the wormhole.

Some time later, he comes to Abydos and kidnaps Skaara and Sha're. His Serpent guards kill many Abydonians and badly wound Major Ferretti. When he dials his home planet, Ferretti has barely enough time to see the Stargate address before collapsing.

Later, in a hall, Apophis "welcomes" Weterings, sudbues her once again. He finds her lovely but declares that he's not the one she must finally please. Disappointed by his queen's rejection, Apophis kills Weterings with his Goa'uld hand device and asks Teal'c to send another one. Finally, Sha're is brought in front of him, and Apophis is pleased by her spirit. He subdues her with his hand device while his guards remove her clothes. Placed on a slab, Apophis orders his guards to turn Sha're before the Goa'uld symbiote comes into her by her neck.

In another room, where the newly formed SG-1 is present, Apophis comes in and introduces the queen. Daniel Jackson recognises Sha're and stands up but is urged by Apophis to kneel before her. Finally, Apophis uses his hand device to throw Daniel on the wall. Colonel O'Neill tries to shoot Apophis, but Amaunet stands before Apophis and a Serpent guard hit O'Neill with his staff weapon.

Many hours later, Apophis comes into the palace's prison in royal box. He assists to the choosing of those who will become the Children of the Gods. After the choosing done, he orders to kill the rest and leaves the prison.

Ready to leave Chulak, he and Amaunet are ring-transported near the Stargate and he starts to dial an address on the DHD. As he is about to step through the Stargate, he sees a death glider exploding. He then steps angrily through to an unknown destination.

"The Enemy Within"

Apophis sends forces through the Stargate several times to attack Earth but they crush on the iris. He finaly gives up.

"The Nox"

Apophis comes back to the Nox homeworld with some Jaffas to find and capture a fenri, an animal with the gift of invisibility. SG-1 tries to ambush him but Apophis kills Daniel, Captain Carter and Colonel O'Neill. He tries to kill Teal'c but Teal'c is suddenly gone. He learns from Shak'l, one of his Jaffas, that the Nox have power. He finds in the woods Nafrayu, a young Nox, and uses his ribbon device on him.

O'Neill thinks using bow and arrow to shoot Apophis who has a personnal energy shield. But at the very moment where O'Neill is pulling the bow, Apophis disappears. The Nox have sent him and his Jaffa through the Stargate.

"Cor-ai"

On Cartago, Teal'c is put in Cor-ai for having killed Hanno's father as ordered by Apophis.

"There But For the Grace of God" (1998)

Just escaping from an alternate reality where Apophis had already invaded Earth, Daniel Jackson warns SG-1 that they are in a big trouble as "they"'re coming.

"Within the Serpent's Grasp"

Apophis speaks to his troops using a Goa'uld long-range visual communication device and introduces his son, Klorel. Later, Klorel announce to Apophis that he has captured O'Neill and the shol'va, Teal'c.

Personality

Apophis is easy to punish to make an example. He killed two of Teal'c's men to retribute the failure to find and capture a Fenri (SG1: "The Nox"). He also used his ribbon device to punish Teal'c (when he was Bra'tac's apprentice), just because Teal'c is the son of Ro'nack, First Prime of Cronos, murdered by Cronos for failing to win an unwinable battle (SG1: "Threshold").

In order to set up his authority, Apophis ordered Teal'c to kill one of Cartago's villagers so the rest would obey. Teal'c choosed the weakest of them, Hanno's father, a crippled man. After, Apophis chose seven women then let the people go. According to Teal'c, Apophis can slaughter complete villages (SG1: "Cor-ai", "Threshold").

Notes

• In "Jolinar's Memories", Na'onak, who is Apophis, is played by Dion Johnstone until the end of the episode, where Apophis reveals his true face. Unlike the other appearances, Peter Williams is credited in the ending credits to preserve the effect of surprise.

Behind the scenes

• David J. Tholen and Roy A. Tucker, two astronomers who are reportedly fans of Stargate SG-1, named a near-Earth asteroid that they co-discovered in 2004, 99942 Apophis as an allusion to the Stargate character.
