Abydos was the first planet visited by the people from Earth during the first Stargate Mission in 1995 (Stargate). It's probably one of the first worlds inhabited by humans taken and enslaved by the Goa'uld. Abydos has been destroyed by Anubis in 2002 (SG1: "Full Circle").

Overview

Abydos was one of the closest planet from Earth, according to Samantha Carter. It had three moons orbiting around the planet. The planet had a 36 hours-revolution

This planet was mainly a big desert, with recurrent sandstorms (Stargate, SG1: "Children of the Gods").

History

Circa 8,000 B.C., the Goa'uld Supreme System Lord Ra came on Earth, took an Egyptian boy to use him as host and started to enslave the primitive population. He brought a Stargate in Giza and started to exile people on Abydos to extract naquadah from an open mine. The people of Abydos built several monuments as wele as a big fortified city, and a pyramid, used to serve as a land path for Ra's mothership (Stargate).

Circa 3,000 B.C., Earth Ancient Egyptians began to rebel and buried the Giza Stargate. As a retaliation, Ra forbid the use of the writing on Abydos in order to avoid a similar rebellion here (Stargate, SG1: "Moebius", Part 2).

Stargate (1995)

Thanks to Doctor Daniel Jackson's discovery, the Giza Project is able to establish a wormhole to a remote planet with the Stargate. A military recon team, led by Colonel Jack O'Neill, is sent to the planet. There, they discover a human civilisation working in a extraction mine. They also meet a new enemy, Ra, Lord of this planet, who has enslaved the locals. With the help of the Abydonians, Colonel O'Neill and his team are able to defeat and kill Ra, and then, to free the people of Abydos. Dr. Jackson, who is part of the recon team, chooses to remain on Abydos, with Sha're, a young local woman given by the Abydos' elders. Colonel O'Neill, Kawalsky and Ferretti are the only survivors to get back to Earth.

Jackson and the Abydonians bury the Stargate and make a big party when they realise they are free at last (SG1: "Children of the Gods").

Notes

• The "Abydos" name is not even pronounced in the movie, nor written in the novel derivated from the movie published in November 1994. Actually, this name is first mentioned in the first Stargate novel written by Bill McCay, Stargate: Rebellion, published in 1995. It has been reused and "canonised" by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner when they wrote the Stargate SG-1 pilot script.
• The Abydos desert scenes in the movie were shot in California and Yuma, Arizona.
• In the movie, Abydos is located in the Kaliam galaxy, "on the other side of the... known universe" according to Catherine Langford. This statement has been retconned in the Stargate SG-1 series, and Abydos has become the closest planet from Earth.
• We don't really know if the planet was destroyed or if only the planet's surface. We just see the explosion of the Abydos pyramid. Yet Abydos is considered as destroyed as the Stargate is completely unaccessible.
